Technique selection is largely covered by the use of selection criteria. It will however include the use of equipment specific to a particular technique that will allow the practitioner to keep the dose “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA). This includes the use of film holders and beam aiming devices and also it is recommended that an x-ray set with a long cone and rectangular collimation should be used when carrying out intra-oral radiography. In the case of extra-oral radiography the use of field limitation techniques should also be encouraged.

| 7.1 All exposures shall show a sufficient net benefit in terms of diagnostic information against any potential detriment from the exposure and must take into account the efficacy and benefits of available alternative techniques involving no or less exposure to ionizing radiation.

What can be audited?
The practitioner is required to employ all techniques available to them to keep the dose to the patient as low as they can for any given radiographic examination. Evidence of this should be recorded in the DPRF.
How do I do it?
Documentary evidence of how the dose to a patient has been reduced is important. Dentists should be able to demonstrate that some or all of the following measures are in place:
• The use of E speed or faster film (for film based practices)
• The faster film/screen combination for extra-oral radiography
• Rectangular collimation on intra-oral x-ray sets
• The use of appropriate film holders and beam aiming devices
